circular needles are like straight needles that have a small plastic wire connecting the ends so you can knit continuously without turning the work as in rows
the dynamics of certain stitches changes when you switch from knitting in rows to knitting in the round, because you are always knitting on the right side (RS) of the work
double pointed needles are necessary for knitting in the round when the number of stitches around becomes too few to fit on a regular circular needle
when knitting with double pointed needles, always have the two needles you are working with positioned 'on top' of your work, so the other needles are out of your way
if double pointed needles intimidate you but you still want to knit socks or gloves, look for the very small circumference circular needles they now make just for this purpose!
