How to Make a Slip Knot

Making a slip knot
Making the slip knot is the first step for knitting before you can begin casting on. Using a slip knot instead of a regular knot secures the stitch around the knitting needle while leaving the loop flexible enough to insert your knitting needle.

To make a slip knot: wrap the tail of your yarn around two of your fingers, holding your palm facing towards you. Once you've gone around the fingers once, bring up a loop at the back of your hand. This loop will be what you insert your knitting needle into. Gently tighten the knot around the needle - but don't pull it too tight. The right tension should allow you to slide the loop back and forth across the needle.
