How to fix an accidental yarn over (yo) increase

My Stitches Are Multiplying!
How Accidental YO Increases Happen
There are a few ways that the accidental increase occurs:
  • Knit with yarn in front - The rule with knitting is that you start with the yarn in back. If you knit with the yarn in front however, it will create the unintentional YO extra stitch.
  • Purl with yarn in back - Similar to the previous error, if you purl with the yarn in the back of the work, an unintentional YO will be created.
  • Moving the yarn to front/back 'around the corner' rather than 'thru the middle' - When moving the yarn to back to knit or front to purl, be sure to move the yarn between the needles. If you pass it around the side, another unintentional YO will be created.

How to Fix an Accidental YO increase
To fix a YO from knit-wyif or purl-wyib or moving the yarn around the corner:
  • If you are tinking: Undo the stitch and move the yarn to the appropriate placement (knit yarn in back, purl yarn in front).
  • If you are fixing it on the next row: When you come to the extra YO on the next row, just drop it off the needle.
