When learning to continental knit, holding the yarn in your left hand as opposed to your right is the main difference. The key is to mastering this technique is to determine how to maintain tension in your left hand. It doesn't matter how you wrap the yarn around your fingers, so long as you can have the proper tension that allows you to be in control of the yarn.
You must make sure that the yarn stays tight when you want it to, and flows easily when you want it to.
The biggest mistake people trying this for the first time make is they keep the yarn tensioned either too tight or too loose. Play with different wraps around your fingers to find which works the best for you.
