How to measure the yarn for a long tail cast on

Measuring Enough Yarn For Your Long Tail Cast On
Too Long Tail Or Not Too Long Tail

Wrap the yarn around your needle 10 times, spacing your wraps as evenly as stitches would be. Keep your finger at that point and measure off that same amount of string as many times 10 as you have stitches. For example, if you are casting on 40 stitches, measure off this length 4 times. Make a slip knot at this place in the yarn.
Since this is just an estimation method, you may end up with some extra tail when you are done. You can try to adjust by measuring off 10 less stitches worth when the total is over 70 stitches.
